The Revitalization of Transatlantic Relations: Restoring Trust, Strengthening Reliance and Expanding Cooperation

AmCham Germany on the inauguration of Joe Biden

Berlin, January 20, 2021 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Germany (AmCham Germany) congratulates Joe Biden on his inauguration as 46th President of the United States of America and Kamala Harris as Vice President of the United States of America. The new US administration led by President Biden should especially restore trust in politics and in the transatlantic relations. Particularly in times of global economic uncertainty, reliable frameworks and political stability are essential for transatlantic companies.

“With Joe Biden as new president of the United States, we look forward to having a reliable partner who knows Germany well and values the importance of international cooperation,’’ says Frank Sportolari, President of AmCham Germany. “We must work together on reducing trade barriers and on implementing regulatory cooperation.’’ Steel and aluminum tariffs imposed on the grounds of a threat to U.S. national security must be lifted, and further tariffs threatened on these grounds must be eliminated.

Define common interests

Europe and the U.S. should clearly intensify their strategic cooperation on global challenges based on their common values. "Together, the U.S. and Europe should work to promote rule-based free trade and mitigate market distortions," says Frank Sportolari. "For internationally active companies, open markets and a fair playing field are essential." The U.S. and the EU, along with other member states, should take a leadership role in reforming the WTO to strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms for rule-based global trade.

"We look forward to engaging with the new U.S. administration and trust that together we will find purposeful responses to the challenges of our time based on shared values and close economic ties," Sportolari concludes.
