Energy & Climate Committee Meeting with Dr. Andreas Lenz, MdB

On September 14, Dr. Andreas Lenz, MdB and one of three parliamentary representatives in the task force "Commission on Growth, Structural Change and Employment", joined AmCham Germany's Energy & Climate Committee to share his views on opportunities and challenges ahead. The highly anticipated task force has been assigned an ambitious mandate: to develop measures that reduce carbon emissions, create a timeline for phasing out coal-fired power production and provide economic perspectives for workers and regions affected by the "coal-exit".

During the meeting, Dr. Lenz briefly outlined the task force's course of action before discussing the challenges of balancing out ecological, social and economic considerations with participants. All agreed that while Germany's coal exit was essential as well as inevitable, sustainable structural change that creates economic opportunities cannot be rushed. Additionally, Dr. Lenz pointed out that in order to be effective, solutions have to be tailored to each region and build on existing structures.
