AmCham Germany's Corporate Responsbility Committee Hosts Dr. Philipp Steinberg, BMWi

On May 13, 2019, industry representatives from AmCham Germany's Corporate Responsibility Committee met with Dr. Philipp Steinberg in Berlin.

Dr. Steinberg, Director-General for Economic Policy at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), is also the Ministry Coordinator for Sustainable Development. Established in 2017, this position is mandated with coordinating the BMWi's efforts to implement the Agenda 2030 and its SDGs. The Coordinator can draw on the support of the Geschäftsstelle Ressortkoordination Nachhaltigkeit, which reports directly to him.

After outlining the ministry's sustainability strategy as well as the initiatives and instruments implemented by the Geschäftsstelle in the past two years, Dr. Steinberg stressed that establishing the concept of sustainable development as a cross-sectional task was key to all political efforts - both within the BMWi and across governmental departments. The other participants agreed that in order to find the best solutions to meet the SDGs on a national and international level, the discourse had to be opened up to involve all stakeholders. The ensuing discussion focused on the inevitable conflicts of interests and the challenging task to address, negotiate and solve these in the political process.

We thank Dr. Steinberg for his time and look forward to continuing the conversation.
