Transatlantic Talks Event: The Biden Administration's and Germany's Green Economy Plans

Speakers: Tina Zierul, ChargePoint Germany GmbH, and Austin Brown, White House Council on Environmental Quality

In light of revitalizing the transatlantic relationship, the fourth round of AmCham Germany's virtual event series Transatlantic Talks 2021 on September 9, 2021, focused on the transatlantic future of mobility. Under the title The Biden Administration's and Germany's Green Economy Plans: Reimagining Transportation, speakers Tina Zierul, Senior Director Public Policy, ChargePoint Germany GmbH and Austin Brown, Senior Director of Transportation from the White House Council on Environmental Quality, offered insights into current policies and programs aimed at promoting sustainable transportation and spurring mobility innovation in the U.S. and Germany.

Furthermore, both speakers concisely explained the far-reaching targets for the transportation sector such as CO2 reduction and infrastructure goals of the Biden Administration and the European Commission as well as Germany’s Climate Action Law. Both the U.S. and Germany share the challenge of improving and extending zero emission mobility solutions; for example, by expanding the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles and addressing the unique situation in more rural areas versus metropolitan regions. The discussants stressed the role of the state to provide incentives for innovation and to motivate people to switch to zero emission solutions for transportation methods – from individual consumers to businesses.

Finally, the transatlantic partnership was underlined by the positive reinforcement and learnings from both the U.S. and Germany and their rollout of such technologies and infrastructure strategies. In the context of the new German administration and the upcoming COP 26 in Glasgow, the room to learn and for dialogue between partners is large.

We thank both speakers for their lively insights and the support from the U.S. Embassy in Berlin for this Transatlantic Talk on such an important subject!
