The majority of surveyed members of AmCham Germany believe that prospects for a transatlantic free trade agreement could improve under a possible Biden Administration.

Berlin, September 14, 2020 – The US presidential election will take place on November 3, 2020, and members of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany (AmCham Germany) are starting to prepare for the next US Administration after the election. According to the surveyed members, the priorities of the next US Administration should be a transatlantic free trade agreement (63.1%), healthcare reform (53.6%), investment in infrastructure (47.6%) and expansion of renewable energy (45.2%).

Seventy-six percent of members believe that prospects for a transatlantic free trade agreement will only improve under a possible Biden Administration. Should Donald Trump be re-elected, 81% of the members surveyed believe that the prospects for further FTA negotiations will deteriorate. "Regardless of the electoral outcome in November, we will work together fully and openly with the next US Administration," says Frank Sportolari, President of AmCham Germany. "It is our joint responsibility to promote and strengthen open and fair trade on both sides of the Atlantic," says Sportolari.

Divide between Republicans and Democrats will grow and the ability of the US Congress to act will be compromised

The growing gap between Republicans and Democrats is also a concern for the members of AmCham Germany. Seventy-six percent of the members surveyed believe that the partisan divide will grow in the coming years. Roughly 54% of the members surveyed stated that they believe that Congress will not pass any essential legislation in the next four years. "Regardless of who wins the election in November, it is essential for the work of Congress and the next president that one works together," said Frank Sportolari. "The challenges facing the country must be addressed and resolved across party lines."
