After the introduction of Saxony Chapter Chair Prof. Dr. Heribert Hekschen, Dr. Norbert Röttgen emphasized that the outcome of the US presidential election had been much closer than expected from a German perspective. For Röttgen, the close election result indicates that the two political groups are much stronger opposed to each other than previously perceived, and that the social divide in the US is enormous and poliarized. For Germany and the EU, this now means that a cultural change is taking place in the United States. Röttgen also outlined that Germany hopes that the new administration will open up to the world, take a multilateral approach, and appreciate its allies. Röttgen believes that the relationship will normalize, however, there will still be conflicts in the future, especially when one thinks of Germany's military spending or Nord Stream 2.
In general, Röttgen stated that Germany needs to become stronger in connection with transatlantic cooperation and more self-confident. Moreover, a transatlantic data room would also be an enormously large and important step for a successful future. Transatlantic cooperation should be key here.
