Operations are global and so is the workforce in our modern world. From medium-sized enterprises to multinational corporations, German companies operating in the United States used to frequently send their German employees to work at their U.S. operations. Be it a skilled worker or a top-level executive, business needs for people who bring home country experience to U.S. operations can have many shapes. Moving employees across the Atlantic has been and still is a key tool for managing local U.S. operations and for streamlining the entire business, both strategically and on a daily basis.

Common strategies and practices are no longer a given in times of COVID-19. U.S. travel bans intended to limit the spread of COVID-19 have made it much more complicated, if not impossible, for German companies to send employees to the United States. On top of these challenges, on June 22, 2020, the President of the United States declared a general ban on certain non-immigrant visas. The stated purpose of this ban is to protect the U.S. labor market from competition by foreign workers. From the perspective of a foreign company, however, the visa ban effectively limits the way in which U.S. operations can be staffed. This latest ban is likely to have a negative effect on the ability to successfully run local operations.
