Aerospace and Defense Committee hosts Rainer Arnold, MdB

On November 24, AmCham Germany’s Transatlantic Aerospace and Defense Committee met with Rainer Arnold, MdB, verteidigungspolitischer Sprecher, SPD-Bundestagsfraktion.

While Mr. Arnold stressed the need for more European defense cooperation and for consolidation of European defense industries, he also affirmed transatlantic cooperation in defense procurement as well as research and development, especially for the larger tasks that can only accomplished with all our resources.  Both approaches are needed, since national procurement projects are too small to make up for r&d costs and at the same time keep key technologies in country.

On export control regulation, a key concern for both German and US companies, while Mr. Arnold stressed the Social Democrat’s commitment to restrictive policies to certain regions, he did encourage a more realistic approach, especially for duel use technology. He additionally underlined the need for binding deadlines on export licenses approvals to protect companies from financial repercussions.

We thank Mr. Arnold for the open and clear dialogue and look forward to continuing our discussions with key parliamentarians on defense issues.
